Review: Hada Labo Gokujyun foaming cleanser

Popular with skincare enthusiasts, does this foaming cleanser live up to the hype?

Hada Labo Gokujyun foaming cleanser is a low ph foaming cleanser that has gained a high reputation for being widely available, affordable, and gimmick-free.

Instead of a formula that relies on irritating foaming agents to achieve its pillowy texture, this cleanser relies on a foaming mechanism in its pump. Since they avoided these extra add-ons, the ingredient list is minimal potential irritants being: Butylene Glycol (acne), Methylparaben. They continue the minimal trend by not adding any extra fragrance!

The formula is a thin watery clear liquid that turns into a dense soft foam that will dissolve with agitation.  Each bottle has 160ml of product that with daily use can last from 6-12 months. Once you are finished you can purchase refill pouches to be environmentally friendly.

While I don’t have ph test strips, it has consistently tested in the 5.5 range as promised. If you haven’t read about ph balanced skincare I highly recommend reading this article by Snow White and the Asian Pear.

Cost : $10-15 USD for 160mL

PH (30℃) 5.5

Directions: Dispense one pump and massage gently. Rinse with lukewarm water.

One pump is plenty for the face and neck. Can be used alone or in combination with a makeup remover / oil cleanser as a two-step routine.

Thoughts: This is a great cleanser if you are looking for something that does the job. After 12 months of use, my skin’s hydration level has improved; however, my acne-prone area did have an increase in white heads. If you are experiencing a similar result but would like to continue using it, following with a BHA/AHA will prevent this. Since I don’t like to use those often, I just use a different cleanser on my acne prone section.

This cleanser removes makeup and sunscreen pretty well, but not always completely.  I’d suggest an additional form of makeup removal for better cleansing.  Overall, it leaves my skin clean, feeling hydrated, and (most importantly) not stripped.
